Description

The GRO Initiative focuses on afforestation in Uganda, working with local communities to restore critical biodiversity while addressing social and economic challenges.

The GRO Foundation and its GRO Initiative is a social-impact organization dedicated to planting 1 billion trees and helping to lift millions of individuals and families out of poverty by 2030 through creating sustainable livelihood projects and connecting grassroots communities to the global carbon market.

GRO Foundation is pioneering climate finance solutions that benefit Uganda's vulnerable communities, women, and youth. The afforestation project, implemented under CDM-methodology AR-ACM0003 and ISO-14064 standards, focuses on re-establishing natural biodiversity by restoring forest reserves, riverlands, and pocket forests. The initiative also provides co-benefits by supporting rural electrification, water and food security projects, and job opportunities for local communities.

At the core of GRO’s methodology is its grassroots approach, incentivizing communities to act as stewards for forest restoration. Participants are rewarded with microfinance opportunities and a share in the profits from carbon sales, ensuring long-term involvement and sustainable impact. By partnering with Carbonmark, GRO can now scale these efforts through the trade of ex-ante credits, bringing much-needed capital to fund these transformative projects.

“Our collaboration with Carbonmark is a game-changer for GRO,” said Paul Flynn, Founder and Trustee at GRO Foundation. “With Carbonmark’s advanced platform, we can accelerate the trade of carbon credits while ensuring the communities we work with benefit directly from these projects. Together, we’re creating a model for how nature-based solutions and innovative finance can drive environmental and social impact.”
